The Science of Words / La Science du mot is a bilingual conference open to all on the love for words and what has been said about them. This event will be held at the University of Victoria October 15-19, 2015. It is organized by the Department of French and the Faculty of Humanities with the support of the Consulate General of France in Vancouver. Two poster fairs will take place on October 15 and 16.
This conference honours the visits on campus of Alain Rey (Editor-in-chief at Le Robert publishing house, author of many dictionaries, a longstanding figure on the radio, and a specialist of the history of the French language), and Dr. Sylvie Bazin (a linguist, French language historian, and designer of the Dictionnaire du Moyen Français). It brings together writers, linguists, researchers, translators, and teachers around the topic of words.

Sylvie Bazin-Tacchella (Université de Lorraine; ATILF/CNRS), La longue durée du temps de peste (1348-1630) : les mots pour dire le fléau
The plague spread massively and suddenly in the West in the middle of the 14th century and did not abate for centuries. It was a topic in both specialized and vulgarization literature, and crept into the literary production–the Temps de Peste, the “corrupt air” and such. The words used to describe the plague are still with us and pervade our language.
